Recently i've noticed some amazingly inspiring photos on the One Kings Lane Instagram account that left me wondering where they were from! Turns out, One Kings Lane recently revealed their first ever 'living' showroom in the Connecticut home of OKL's own president, Debbie Propst. The first floor of her home that she shares with her family showcases not only her amazing talent (along with the team at OKL), but also many pieces that are available for purchase through OKL.
The farmhouse-style home was modernized to showcase how people can actually live with these furnishings in the home and with the hope of inspiring customers to create their own tailored design with the OKL studio. The style of the home is a mix of what OKL has to offer. Some pieces are vintage, some picked by the OKL buyers, while others made specifically by OKL themselves. I think the mix is fantastic, the house looks so inviting and cozy!Read More
It goes without saying that most spaces look better with some type of greenery incorporated into the design. Indoor plants (not flowers) can really help tie a room together, while at the same time add important visual interest to a room. For some, caring for indoor plants may come naturally, but for others (like myself), this can be quite challenging. Our condo has very little natural light, therefore almost every plant I have brought into our space has died! I used to think you could place any plant anywhere you wanted as long as your remembered to water it here and there, but I was wrong! Don't let this discourage you from buying indoor house plants - as long as you simply take a few minutes to learn about caring for a specific plant (and have some natural light), you should be able to keep it alive and looking great!
Here are a few tips when buying indoor house plants:Read More
Love the look of copper but not sure how to incorporate this metallic tone into your decor? There are so many elements you can decorate with that don't include the typical 'Moscow mule mugs' (which are still great - I do have some myself!). True, it is easiest to include copper items in your kitchen - you can find a variety of accessories at almost any home store, but you can also incorporate this great warm metallic tone in almost any other room of your home.Read More
If you have ever tried searching for the perfect area rug for your home, you may have noticed that quality rugs can be hard to come bye! The majority are expensive (i'm talking thousands!) and most affordable options have that cheap synthetic feel that you don't want in your home! It's true - shopping for large rugs can be a challenge if you're on a budget, but this is where the black and white Ikea STOCKHOLM rug comes in! This may not be a rug that many consider at first, but at $350 CAD for a 8 x 11 foot, 100% flat-weave wool rug - this piece shouldn't be overlooked, as it works in any room and with most styles of decor! (Nate Berkus used this rug in his own Chicago home and it made the cover of ELLE Decor - need I say more?).Read More
This past weekend I spent Saturday morning in the country at Finnegan's, a flea market located just west of Montreal in the charming city of Hudson. While I did not find any treasures this time around, it was a perfect fall day with so many incredible fall colours everywhere - so the trip was not a total loss! Since I had made the short trek to Hudson, I decided to check out a local shop/atelier that was recommended to me as a 'must see'. It was described as a place Joanna Gains from Fixer Up would LOVE, and that description was totally on point.
2 Barn Owls is an art gallery/boutique/workshop located in an old barn right on Main Street. The two owners, Nancy Farnum and Mavis Martin describe their labour of love as "urban farmhouse chic". With everything from custom artwork to refinished antique furniture to handmade sculptures, 2 Barn Owls is truly one of a kind! If you like this style of decor and are looking for unique pieces, I would highly recommend checking this place out! Only downside is that the barn is only open Friday and Saturdays between 10 and 5 from May to October.......! This is because the barn is not heated and simply cannot open during the colder months. The good news is that you can make an appointment to visit whenever you want and both Nancy and Mavis will work with you on custom pieces and projects if you wish. From what I saw and understand, there is only ONE of everything making each piece one of a kind and exceptionally unique.Read More
When some people hear the word 'leopard' in the world of home decor, they automatically think tacky or outdated! In my opinion, those adjectives couldn't be further from the truth. When done correctly, decorating with animal prints is always a good idea! I'm not suggesting you wallpaper your entire dining room in a zebra print wallpaper and upholster your chairs in a wild cheetah print - you should typically use these prints as accents to your other decor. With that being said, there are so many places in your home to use animal print other than throw pillows (which is still awesome) that you may never have thought of.Read More
I am currently on the hunt for floor lamps for an upcoming project, so I have lighting on the brain and thought I would share some great inspiration with you along with some lighting sources.
I remember searching for a floor lamp for our condo over two years and thinking, wow all floor lamps are so ugly. I think it's because I a) had a small budget (which unfortunately does limit your options) and b) had a hideous 80's style brass swing arm floor lamp in my bedroom growing up and I assumed all floor lamps must be just as ugly! At the time, I ended up choosing a simple black lamp base from IKEA which I eventually ended up hating and got rid of and now realize how lighting can really add so much interest to a space, especially floor lamps! I have since become obsessed with pharmacy style floor lamps. These are not new to the design world by any means, just a type of light I had not considered in the past and have grown to love.
Alone this style may not be very appealing to everyone, but when styled in a space they look AMAZING! Pharmacy style lamps come in many different finishes (silver, brass, antique brass, black, oil rubbed bronze, or even different colours) and can vary in style. These are great because they are relatively slim, take up minimal space, and they look great in almost any room in a home!Read More
When I say choosing a neutral paint colour is hard, you may think "how hard can it be to pick a white?" Well good luck going into a paint store and asking for 'the white' and expect to walk out with a gallon of the perfect paint 30 seconds later. Deciding on which neutral hues to use in your home is often more difficult than choosing brighter colours. As weird as it sounds, lighter hues tend to all look similar, while as the same time end up looking completely different when placed next to each other and in the end, NOTHING like you expect when painted on a wall! For an old apartment of mine, we wanted a 'light grey' for the entire place. Next thing we know - we were picking a colour right from the swatch (first mistake) and the entire place resembled a giant dolphin! Last time my parents painted their main hallway, my mom chose a 'soft cream/beige' colour, but it looked more like a basket of peaches!Read More
There are so many decisions to consider when designing/decorating your home and sometimes it is just easier to stick with safe options and keep a neutral palette. Don't get me wrong - this can be an amazing option when layered with different textures and patterns, but it is SO fun to use bold colours here and there!Read More
